A Modern MacBraynes Ferry

Caledonian Macbrayne has an excellent company website.

In summer 2000 Janet and I did an overnight sail from Mallaig to the Isle of Barra. The sail included our evening meal, a cabin for the night and breakfast on our return journey. We found the standards on the ship to be high, the food good, although the cabin was small. No stateroom with a private promenade deck of the sort found on the Titanic. Unlike the White Star line however, Calmac has a very good record of not running into things in general and icebergs in particular and the accommodation was adequate for our needs. The overnight cruise was an excellent way to see the picturesque town of Castlebay on Barra and to sample a spectacular Western Isles sunset.

M.V. "Lord of the Isles" at Armadale. This is the summer car ferry from Mallaig to Armadale on Skye and it does occasional cruises to Barra and Lochboisdale on South Uist.
