The Croft Studio, Dunvegan

Just outside Dunvegan on the A850 Dunvegan to Portree road is the Croft Studio.

The studio in a former croft house is one of the few Skye craft shops which I would recommend. The work is of a high standard and is a world apart from the usual junk which is peddled to the unsuspecting tourist.

The studio has a website.

Inside the studio, which is run by Donald, Pamela and Daisy Budge, is to be found a wealth of Celtic artwork including silk screen printing, paintings, watercolours, cards and a range of other work.

The studio is well worth a visit. If you do go, please make sure to ask for a red Irish linen cushion cover. (They are sadly a discontinued line, but, with a little customer pressure, one never knows............)

I know that "goods for the discerning customer" is a bit of a cliche, but here it is true. If you appreciate art, this is the place for you.

If you don't, then go somewhere dreadful like Drumnadrochit and buy yourself a plastic model of the Loch Ness monster.

The Duirinish Stone

This section should really be a separate area on the map, but it isn't due to lack of space. however, it is logical to put it here since Donald Budge had a hand in what follows.

Just down the road from the Croft Studio, in the direction of Dunvegan, and on the right, is a ruined church and a standing ancient stone, not to be confused of course with an ancient standing stone.

The Duirinish stone is undoubtedly ancient, but it has only been standing since the year 2000, when local people decided to do something to mark the millennium and upended the said stone. As Donald Budge remarked, not many people have done something which will probably be around in another 2000 years.

Of course, Donald did not do it all himself; others were involved and Bob Cleland, knifemaker extraordinaire, might have had a hand in it.
