Sconser

From the little village of Sconser it is possible to get a ferry to the island of Raasay, which is also included in this guide.

  Loch Striven at Raasay

In the old days, Raasay was on the itinerary of a steamer which sailed from Mallaig to Portree, but this service was discontinued many years ago.

When I first visited Skye in 1972 the passenger ferry to Raasay went from Sconser Lodge Hotel and was a little open boat with an outboard motor.

Subsequently a pier was built at Sconser and the first car ferry was the M.V. Raasay, which looked not unlike a World War 2 landing craft, although it was a modern ship. As demand for the service has increased, this vessel has been replaced by the larger Loch Striven.
