The Quiraing

The Quiraing is in the Northern part of Skye on the Trotternish Peninsula and access to it is gained from a minor road connecting Uig and Staffin which is not shown on the clickable map. There is a small car park on the road just before the road descends through a steep winding pass with hairpin bends towards Staffin.

The walkers track follows along the line of the cliffs until one arrives at a pass between the cliffs themselves and a rock formation known as The Prison. It is then possible to begin a steep ascent towards the cliffs and, after arduous scrambling one arrives at two tables which are level grassy areas.

On a clear day there are excellent views to be had of Staffin and the mainland.

It is said that in the old days there was an annual Shinty match played there. it is also said that the grassy tables were used as a shelter for cattle in times of trouble. How the cattle got up there I do not know. They must have been exceeedingly athletic.
