Loch Slapin Area

If you turn off the main road at Broadford on to what is euphemistically called the A 881, you will find yourself going to Elgol via Torrin and Loch Slapin.

On the shores of Loch Slapin you will see a quarry where, surprisingly, marble is quarried. The marble is difficult to work, and that is why it is not commonly known. It is mainly used in the form of chipping. These marble chippings are used to face houses and they are also used in the production of composite of marble slabs. it is not unknown for the waste marble to be used for the foundation of the road which passes at the quarry. If you stop in one of the passing places on the single track road, and you look carefully, you might well find yourself a rather nice paper weight to take home.

As you go round Loch Slapin, you will go around the landward end of the loch where a river flows into the loch itself. Many years ago, this river was crossed by a ford. Nowadays there is a bridge. The bridge has always been there during my lifetime but, one year I decided to use the ford for an impromptu car wash.

By this time I could afford a decent car. Click on the image to enlarge
