The Kilt Rock

The Kilt rock is so called because the cliff is formed of basalt columns which fold like the folds in a kilt. Nowadays the viewing area is depressingly safe and fenced off. When I first went to Skye in 1972 there was no viewing area and you were free to fall off the cliff if you wished. There has been at least one suicide there and at least one accidental tragedy. In the 1960s an Indian honeymoon couple were at the Kilt rock when the girl's billowing sari acted like a kite and she was lifted over the cliff to her death.

When the wind is blowing hard and from the sea, the waterfall has been known to go not down the cliff but straight up into the air and back onto the moor!
